Music as Graphic Scores | Designs on Performance

1 July to 18 September 2022

Seeing Sound (detailed view) by Jo Ganter and Raymond MacDonald

Art created by the pupils of Stoneyburn and Addiewell Primary Schools and including original collaborative artworks by Jo Ganter and Raymond MacDonald.

The exhibition is the culmination of an intensive Youth Music Initiative (YMI) project in schools throughout the region. It has been produced and delivered by Limelight Music, Scotland's leading employer of musicians with impairments, through a series of collaborative sessions shared in the context of the changing dynamics of the pandemic.

The collaboration of the visual art and musical education outreach to local schools was also designed by and featured Limelight Music's musicians complemented by the visual scores of the artist and printmaker Jo Ganter RSA and her work with primary school children in West Lothian.  Children participated from P4 to P7 classes of Stoneyburn and Addiewell Primary schools.

Jo Ganter has worked with the musician Raymond MacDonald since 2014 to produce graphic scores: visual works of art that direct music.  The scores have been performed by world-leading musicians in Europe, the USA and China as the potential of visual art to direct music becomes internationally recognised.  Within her own practice, Jo also experiments with composition and colour, as indicative of music in their movement within her art.
